Hi all,
wow thank you so much for all the wonderful helpful replies it really does make me feel better knowing there are people out there to help! So thank you so much!
We have picked an area and are searching for flats there, it is a good area with reasonable prices, and is the middle ground for both of us to commute, the postcode is WS11.
We live in the midlands by the way in the general area of staffordshire (without giving too much away)
I am comforted to hear that it CAN be done...neither of us mind giving a few things up, but we are good with money anyway and budget etc and do not spend out of our means and we both save where we can...so i just wanted to check that there is a possibility that it can be done...i didnt want us in debt
So thank you for all the advice. My parents have said they can help a bit with something towards rent, I currently pay £300 for the flat we are in now with the college, which is inclusive of all bills (very lucky i know!) and we have just seen a small 1 bed house in a good area which is £400 a month.
Then of course there is council tax and the bills to budget for.
Does anyone know how i can find out about council tax for a 1 bed house in the WS11 area?
Also what would be the budget for gas, electric and water? I appreciate you cannot know exactly, but if anyone has a round about figure for what each would be a month that would be great...we are good and switch everything off and don;t leave lights on etc
We are going to view this place on wed night. it has only just come on the market and looks good so fingers crossed.
We went to see a 1 bed ground floor flat today which was nice but it was just too small, the bedroom was only a single size, which was no use. Shame as it would of been nice and only a street down from OH grandparents!
Thank you again for all your advice, it is so so so much appreciated!
If anyone can help with the council tax and bill prices please do
Hope your all ok x0 -
Why not look in an area where you will only need one car - that extra car a drainschueys_girl wrote: »Hi all,

The council will be able to tell you the Council tax for that property. At the moment you'd probably need £80 for gas and electric and £25 ish for water. Don't panic - you should be OK on that money if you are careful.Grocery challenge July £250

I believe some pension companies allow you to suspend payments for up to a year if necessary, without penalties. Worth considering if you are really struggling.0

Perhaps you should look at some of the SoAs on DFW board, your income isn't actually that low? There are people with comparable incomes and kids who seem to make ends meet.0 -

You want to start here: http://www.voa.gov.uk/cti/InitS.asp?lcn=0
You'll need to know the address of the property you're interested in. The postcode will help the site identify which council covers the property and what the council tax band is. WS11 means nothing, because apparently you have four different councils down there that span that post area!
Once you know the band and the council, google the council's website and look for a list of council tax bands and prices.
For example, if the flat you were considering renting, was located in the Cannock Chase area, you could use this document to figure out the council tax: http://www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/downloads/Charge_08-09.pdf
Hope that helps give you a nudge in the right direction.0 -
band is found by
http://www.voa.gov.uk/council_tax/cti_home.htm
and look council tax levels up on the council's website.0 -

It definitely can be done. I don't have student loans or any other debt, but I support both myself and my boyfriend (who is out of work at the moment, and doesn't get JSA because he hasn't paid enough NI). I live in the high cost South East, I earn £1300 after tax, and pay £775 rent, £130 council tax, £40 water, dunno what monthly for gas and elec (my last electricity bill was £100 for the quarter!), £60 DD for phone/internet etc, £40 per month car insurance.
It doesn't leave much for fun after buying food (and being careful about food shopping too). You're on about the same as me, and you seem to live in a lower cost area (£400 for a one bed house! You couldn't even get a ROOM in a house for that round here). I think you'll be alright. Try not to worry too much, and at least you have your parents to help if you find it a bit tight.0
