Back in the 80s my wife and I bought a can of beans that, when I was about to open, felt and sounded really sloppy. We took it to trading standards (not as a complaint but because we had many friends) and they did a 'controlled and witnessed opening'.

Turned out the can was partly full of sauce but no beans!

TS wrote to the company, and we got a reply that the bean hopper had maybe stuck, therefore, beanless. They also offered us a £2 voucher to spend on their goods, and we were very happy to accept.

Don't want to mention the company but their beanz were fine usually ;)

I have heard that their beans are very good, but I don't like baked beans.

I wondered about the first tin and thought it might have been an aberration, but every tin was the same, the spaghetti barely covered a slice of toast.

You must have had a bad batch. I must have had about 30+ tins of this now over last 2 or so years and never once had 1/6th of a tin its always been about 85-90+% full

Oh and the beans are so good! I haven't tried the spagetti but I've been converted to Branston Beans. Tried the macaroni too and it was quite nice.

Another fan of Branstons Baked Beans. As the beans were so good tried some of their spaghetti , what a disappointment, also found them watery and bland.

It's strange how the beans can be so good and the spaghetti so bad

Premier had the HP brand under licence for many years. HP then sold off the licence, and Heinz outbid premier, thus premier had lost their premium brand (they mostly produce own label at their long sutton and wisbech sites).

Having acquired the Branston brand name, they invested huge sums of money into making it their new premium brand to rival Heinz. Even to the extent of taste testing online in comparison with Heinz. They were looking for a richer sauce and bigger more consistently sized bean. This was all in aid of making a major breakthrough into the market.

However, on a personal note i wouldn't touch any of it with a bargepole as having spent over six years working at their main site i'd not be going near anything produced there again.

OP you need to write to the makers telling them the can was full of watery sauce and very little spaghetti. If you can dig out the can from your bin, enclose the label with your letter.
It's more than likely they will send you some MOCs to more than cover your loss.

I would email or write to them about this, that is not the usual standard of branston products, i always buy branston beans (the best beans IMO) and branston spaghetti, and its always been fab!

I love Branston Beans stocked up and got 12 tins today from Morrisons. I have bought them ever since hubby and me did a blind taste test in Tesco when they first came out. Have to admit their spaghetti is a real let down though, emailled them to complain when I first tried it, said I loved their beans but spaghetti was awful. Got money off coupons from them!! so it's worth complaining.

i have to agree, the beans are great but the spaghetti is horrible!!
don't know how you manage to make something so simple quite so nasty tasting!!
  • Another agreement from me, love the beans but hate their spaghetti, it's bland and tasteless! But I've never had a tin that's only been a sixth full, definitely not normal! xxx
