Egg Money... again

I have a £1000 limit on an Egg Money card. I bought a few items in the christmas sale and was at about £600. I had lots more to buy and was aware that i was reaching my limit very quickly, so i paid one payment of £500 and another of £200 to bring it down on Tuesday and Wednesday. The balance is always paid off in full regardless.

Now Egg takes 4 working days for it all to clear and that brought me over my limit by £10-15 and still want interest for it (Another £3-4). Despite the fact that the first payment was 3 days ago, and the customer service woman noticed that there was 2 payments already in the system. she also had the shocking cheek to ask if i would have any payment issues in the future?

Is there anything i can do about claiming this back?

    Why is it shocking?
You failed to keep your side of the agreement (albeit small).

I think you need to put up exactly what you've been charged.
Is it interest? or fee and charges?
The someone can say whether there are any unfair charges.

It was shocking because i made 2 payments several days before the account went "over" the limit, which the woman could see and stated herself. Plus the way she said it wound me up further. In reality the whole thing goes down to the overlap between me and Egg (4 working days).

According to the statement it went over by about £40 and they added £4.50 interest.

I don't know how she spoke to you but it's your responsibility to make payments allowing for the clearance times.
I can't excuse her manner but you are reponsibile for going over the limit.

If it's interest then I don't think you can do anything if it agrees with the contract that you agreed to.
There are such things as unfair charges, but that does not apply to interest.

So no, I don't think there is anything you can do, unless you want to try to appeal to their better nature. I'm not sure that Egg have one though.
  • I'm quickly finding out they don't have a better nature. This is the second time i've had a over limit in questionable circumstances like this.

It shouldn't affect my credit rating should it?

Don't forget that the breach may have occurred a couple of days before you think it did, due to the actual purchase transaction date (ie the date they earmark/seek authorisation) being a couple of days before the date it's posted to your account.

Internally, yes. Externally, possible, but unlikely.

Sorry but there are no questionable circumstances.
It's your reposnsibility to allow for the stated clearance time full stop.

    Externally I would think not.
Late payments are recorded but not limit breaches.

Internally, I don't know how Eggs system works, but they might well record limit breaches internally so it might go against you.
  • That's true about the authorisation dates.

Right, so in future if i buy a large purchase i will just pay it off immediately rather than waiting to the statement date.

    Lisyloo, fine. I concede that.

If it's Egg money you could put some money on it in advance.
    It's designed for this.

You could also try and apply for a limit increase which you can do on-line somewhere.
I did this a few months ago and it was accepted, but I chose a relative small amount.
You might be better off asking for a small amount e.g. £1200 and getting accepted rather than asking for too much and getting declined.
  • I tried to increase it to 3000 (which would save the hassle entirely) and they declined it.

I will just pay off larger payments above 100 immediately. I normally make payments but only once. My fault here.
