Questions To Moped Owners
Options
I want to get a Moped.
I do not have a full driving license, just a provisional. Do I have to get a different provisional license for the bike or is the one I already have ok to take lessons?
Do I have to get a full license once I have past the CBT Moped road test?
Do I have to do the theory test like the one if you were a learner driver?

From what my friend told me who is 16 and drives a moped, he says you need to do CBT, which allows you to drive a moped up to 50cc (speed limited at 31mph) for 2 years, then the CBT expires.
You have to drive with L plates on through this time. There should be a "p" at the bottom on the back of your provisional, which allows you to drive one.
There's no theory test.0 -

The provisional you have is fine
Do I have to get a full license once I have past the CBT Moped road test?
You don't have to get a full license if you only want to ride for less than 2 years (your cbt expires after 2 years) if you want to ride for longer than two years you can get your license any time when your cbt is still valid
Do I have to do the theory test like the one if you were a learner driver?
Only when you want to get your full bike license
hope it helps0 -
Thank you guys :beer:0

the provisional only counts if it says on the licence that it counts.... and it will say.. strangely some prov car licenses count for bikes, some don't.... and as an aside, depending how long you've had your provisional, you may not need to do cbt.... my grandad licence allows me to ride a 125 or less up til my 70th birthday on l plates.. without cbt, test, etc....0

Thats if you have a full driving license.0 -
Thats if you have a full driving license.
And passed many years ago.
If I was you, I'd consider doing my full bike licence now, and pass the main test then you'll always be able to buy a bike in the future if it takes your fancy and not have to pass the new tougher test.
The only problem is once I'd riden the 500cc and noticed the difference in power and braking, I didn't want to go back on a 125.0 -
The type of vehicle you ride in your CBT dictates what you are allowed to ride after the CBT. I did my CBT on a 125cc geared motorbike, so I could ride anything under that. But if you do it on a 50cc moped you won't be able to ride anything bigger than that
You need to renew CBT every 2 years if you don't go on to a full license, but IMHO it's £500 well spent to get your full license.Kavanne

No it doesn't the CBT is basic training which allows you to ride anything up to 125cc, there is not two different certificates.0

EDIT: I think this may be due to automatic and manual?
EDIT 2: See here: http://www.motorcycle-training.f2s.com/training.html
Hope that helpsKavanne

Nope, even if he did it on a 50cc auto, he'd still be able to ride a 125 manual. I've never done a CBT on a manual bike, but two with an auto, I've now got my full licence.
The only difference is the age restriction, if he was 16 he would only be able to ride a 50cc bike capable of not more than 30mph. If he was over 16 and did it on an auto, he'd be able to legally ride a manual, but as your link shows they recommend that the CBT is done on a manual so that you get used to it.
As your link explains, at 16 the CBT taken on a Moped allows the rider to ride a Moped, the same CBT Cert would at the age of 17 allow the rider to ride a 125.
The big difference is when you take a licence test on a Moped, Motorcycle under 33bhp manual or auto, or on a Motorcycle over 33bhp. Taking the test on a moped gives a moped licence, on a 125 gives the restricted licence (limited to automatics if you pass on an auto), or if you pass on bike with 35bhp you get the full licence.0
