Car Leasing Advice

Can someone point me towards some websites that will give me reliable information on the pros and cons of leasing a car, I am hunting around on google but a good recommendation is always best.

I am researching for my mum whose current car is on its last legs.

She is just due retire in the next 3 - 5 years and should get a lump sum on retiring so is looking at getting something to tide her over until then, which is why we thought leasing might be the way to go.

She is a sensible driver with low mileage.

Can anyone give me any hints/tips/pointers on where to start so I can figure out the best thing for her to do.

Best advice I can give you at this point is go to the main motoring section page on this forum and click search this forum button and type in "leasing" or "lease".

We have covered this in quite a bit of detail.

If mileage is around 10k per year then leasing might be an option. Don't decide on the car, decide on the deal some cars you will never get a decent deal on a lease. Good lease deals are where the manufacturer is trying to shift stock without obviously cutting prices.

May i just ask a question along the same subject. i recently accepted an offer for a graduate job with an large accountancy firm starting in september. as part of their benefits package there is an option to lease a car from them. the prices include breakdown cover and insurance etc. i understand they have a very wide range of cars to choose from, but i have no idea what sort of price range they are. At the moment i am a student with no no-claims and am trying to work out if leasing will be more cost effective than buying a car outright.

Depends on mileage for a start, you need to give some more figures and what sort of vehicle (or what band of vehicle) they are offering.

Having insurance included could save you some money.

Hiya, sounds like a Company Car Scheme – whereby they do it as a ‘lease’ maybe to save benefit in kind – (a lot of companies do this) if you can ‘opt’ out take the cash and lease your own car, then you might get a better deal.. but you’ll also have the insurance and fuel cost, (fuel you could (probably) claim back.. ? i.e for the business miles)

As far as Lease V Buying.. only you can make that decision – buying anything in this climate is a tricky decision.. if you buy? you accept depreciation, plus cost of financing your purchase, if you ‘lease’ you basically fund ‘depreciation’ sometimes you can ‘lease’ a more expensive vehicle for less???

i.e you can afford £150.00 per month (+vat) which should get you between a £10,000 and £15,000 worth of vehicle (RRP)

But…
You might not be in a position to buy or fund a £15,000 car loan.. if you then talk about a second hand vehicle that was once worth £15,000 then your not comparing ‘apples with apples’ there are bargains to be had, both on ‘lease’ and on ‘used’ even ‘new’ (outright purchase) .. I’m sure you’ll get help (if you ask)

I think you need to decide what you want.. what you need? do you want an asset* or just a car? (remember vehicles *depreciate, and it generally cost % to borrow money)

I took out a 2 year lease hire deal on a car. At the time i had a company wit my ex partner and because he didnt have much of a credit rating, i acted as guarantor. I have split up with my ex, and gave him the building company but i am now stuck with a car which is costing me £590 a month which i cant afford. Is there any way of getting out of a lease hire agreement without getting an IVA against you?

Read your lease. It will cost you though.

Whose name is the car in? If it's in his name then you might want to think of court action but you will need legal advice.

IMO, you should really start a new thread about this. However, the point of being the guarantor is if your ex is not willing/able to pay the lease, you are obliged to make the payments.

Only two avenues I can think of...

Firstly try and get your ex to pay something towards it. From your post, it seems he is still using the vehicle, so try and get him to cough up, especially if his name is on the paperwork.

The other option is speak to the lease company about terminating early.
There will be some payment to make, but it might not be as much as the total of remaining payments.
