I had a similar experience. I the space of a month i had MBNA reduced from 9600 to 8000, Amex from 4700 to 1700!, Egg from 6k to 3k and Halifax from 5k to £500. I rang them but they werent interested in changing their minds. i just had to see it as them taking temptation out of my way
  • Do not ignore the £140 remaining.

The bank will not give a monkeys how much it is chasing you for, £140, £1400 or £14,000. It will hound you & then sell your debt on & your creidt file will be seriously affected.

I can see why you are peed off btw, just wanted to offer somce advice.

  • Same happened to me with Barclaycard (who run SkyCard). £3500 down to £500, they gave me two months to bring balance below credit limit before they start applying overlimit fees etc.

This is the credit crunch taking its toll now I'm afraid. They can see your entire credit profile and if they think you look risky they can do what they like, according to the T&Cs. Maybe it was the previous late payments, maybe the amount of total debt (if you have any loans/large mortgage on the go?). Something triggered the system anyway.

  • Having calmed down a little, I will indeed be paying off the £140. Having said that, to those who say BC have the right to reduce credit limits without warning, this is actually incorrect as it's a contravention of terms and conditions that require 30 days' notice. I've channeled my frustration into lodging a complaint to this effect with the ombudsman and writing to a national newspaper about it (who are investigating). Then I can just get on with my card-free life :-)

The ombudsman will do nothing until you have complained to Barclays and exhausted their complaints procedure.
  • Yes they did this to my husband and I. Unfortunately we were late with a payment over christmas, our first late time ever, with our post office CC, we paid two days late as we didnt get the statement till late. Next thing we find our limit on BC has been cut bak from 2500 to 700. We had no notification, we had to phone to find out what the problem was. Same story cut back as they had been told we had a late payment. I have also cut up the card, just going to pay it off and be done with them.
