Car broken into - smashed window

Hi everyone

Just got back from 2 weeks travel, and I'd left my car parked on the road. My mistake really...although nothing was in sight, someone broke into it by smashing the passenger window. My satnav was taken, but that's not a big deal. No other damage apparent.

I haven't checked the fine print on my insurance, but I think the excess will kick in, so I might be better off sorting this out myself.

It's a Honda Accord - do I need to go to the dealer for the glass? What's my best bet? Thanks in advance.

usualy a seperate clause for glass /vandal damage

should be £50-60 excess which will be cheaper than paying out to have it done

yeah the windscreen cover will take care of the window less your excess of around the £50 mark

or if your lucky you might find one in a breakers yard, they are not that difficult to change

Thanks guys - windows are electric, I should add.

Would an insurance claim for this affect my no claims' discount?

Find out the recommended glass repairer under your policy and go to them. The main advantage is direct billing.

Glass damage as the others have said normally incurs the £50-60 excess but some policies also cover damage and dents to bodywork caused by the broken glass without affacting your no claims. You need to check your policy carefully though.

For broken car windows the access is the same as the windscreen. I know this from experience. :o

I would claim on the insurance. Honda glass is often slightly tinted and you will be guaranteed an exact match and professional job more important as it is an up and down window.

    It didn't affect my no-claims.

Thanks everyone - £65 excess payable to RAC Auto Windscreens...same as the deal for windscreen replacement. Hope they can help me clean up all the shards of broken glass!

was the damage not reported to the police by a neighbour?

I doubt health and safety would let the RAC touch broken glass???

It will be safety glass so a dust pan and brush should do the job in a jiffy. Clearing up the glass will be your problem.

Could try the hoover but it will probably kill it if you did the bulk of the job but would probably be ok for getting the last bits up that are in those hard to get places.

Good point markelock - just called them now. They're OK with it. I'm going over this afternoon...they'll put in a temporary plastic one in now, and then send their mobile service over at a later date when the original glass arrives.

I was more interested in how good your neighbours are; and also, you're pretty lucky the car didn't get towed away as it wasn't secure (so one good thing out of it all)

    I hate car thieves.
