Any tips for a new laptop?

I'm looking to buy a laptop for work away from home.
Hoping for a
- DVD rewriter,
- Access to internet (for a remote location with no telephone line etc. - I think you can get top-up cards that work via GPRS - unsure need advice on this)
- £600/£700 I'd be prepared to pay.
Any other advice would be appreciated. Never had a laptop before, just normally house PC.
