Camcorder to DVD Is it really this difficult?

I have some camcorder footage I want to transfer to DVD. I have a Sony combined DVD/VHS Recorder. Connected cam to Sony, copied to -R disk and it plays fine on Sony but knowhere else. Tried the disk in various DVD players, PC`s, laptops, nothing. The only place it plays is where it was created.
Thinking it was something perculiar to Sony, have now borrowed a LG combined DVD/HD recorder. Transferred to HD then dubbed to -R DVD and you guessed it, DVD plays fine on LG but not on Sony, laptop, desktop or stand alone DVD player.
Am I missing something obvious or is it really this difficult?
Thanks in advance.

Is there an option to finalise the disc, you usally need to do this to play it on another dvd player0

Thanks, yes that was the problem. Can`t understand why it does`nt happen automatically. The option was hidden in the LG menu which didn`t help.
Thanks again.0 -
The disk will not be finalised automatically in case it is not full and you want to add more content before finalizing. A non finalised disk *may* play on a PC in many cases.0
