To be honest didnt mean to offend anyone, it just seemed to me to be against everything that is recommended on these forums

As for building up credit, im more inclined to go the route of getting a good cashback card for purchases and pay the balance up every month.

Bank of Slate & Nazi invite you to apply for your personal credit card.
Our apr is a competitive 250% typical rate and you could borrow up to £50,000.
All we require is your kidney and first born child as security. The signature of both your Grandparents and their retirement home as a deposit.
Should you default on your payments, your child will be auctioned off and all your internal organs seized.
We reserve the right to disply your head on a spike in front of our London office as a warning to others.
Don't delay! You have been pre-approved for this special offer.

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

It's catch 22 though because if you have a bad credit rating then you won't get accepted for cashback cards!

  • Sorry, I now this is obvious but .....

You only pay the APR if you borrow the money i.e. if you pay it off in full each month, then you pay no interest.

If you need to borrow money to buy anything, then a credit card is not really the best option anyway - unless you get one which is 0% for purchases.

Credit cards, despite their name, are not really ideal for "credit". If you have one, you should just use it for cashflow and pay the balance off in full, every month. At least, do that once you're debt-free :)

I got one of these too. However mine was slightly different. Like the OP, I have no intention of going anywhere near them but I find it fascinating reading. My offer was anywhere between 36.something % and 65%!!!! Oh and there was a £20 acceptance fee involved too. Now I was tempted to put a "pressie" in there and send it back at their expense.

If you don't want to get junk mail sent to you then why don't you register with the Mailing Preference Service.

We did this a while ago and now most of the stuff that comes through our door is what we want or need (with the occasional letter for previous occupants that we just send back). Makes quite a difference as we can go for weeks without getting mail (bills are all online anyway).

    Debt-free and Proud!
Well i have a Vanquis card also, solely for the purpose of rebuilding and improving my credit history....like JW I pay it off in full each month so no interest charged and a nice [0] for the month on my credit reports :j

I have a limit of £250 with APR 39.9% but to be honest not bothered by that as no interest is charged each month :D:D plus the limit is so low if I did not pay one month the interest wouldn't be bad...it's not like a full up card of £3,000 etc ;)
