Hi, I have been having problems with messenger. There seemed to be an old version of it on my pc which stayed when i updated to a newer version, although there was still a shortcut on the desktop (which worked) the program itself was nowhere to be found. I updated again yesterday from the newer version to the latest one and although the version worked whilst the pc was on, when i turned it off it disappeared and the only remaining shortcut was to the old version, like it had eaten it! I uninstalled and then reinstalled it several times (from microsoft and then from download.com) with the same results. I removed the new program and did a pc search (the one with the sniffing dog) and it found loads of hidden files related to messenger (209) which i was unable to delete. I've run several good antivirus progs which haven't found anything) I am not great with pc's as you can probably guess and could really do with some advice, i feel something is going on. I saved the list of files that the pc found if anyone can tell from looking at them what they are. Any help'd be really appreciated, thanks

My advice would be to download, install and run this program:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
It is a great, totally free program used for cleaning up all your "no longer needed" files on your pc. Sometimes straggling files from uninstalled programs and unneeded registry entries can cause havoc with new installations! I would uninstall Messenger, then run ccleaner, reboot and try installing Messenger again. Its worth a try!0 -
Hi, many thanks but i've got system care on which deletes old registry entries, spyware etc and has file and system clean ups, have done all that. I ran the hippo one you recommended last night but the files remain. Bit stuck really, thanks very much for your advice tho xxx0

This sounds like Windows Messenger, are you running Windows XP? If you are then there is a simple way to uninstall it.
- Open the Control Panel
- Open Add or Remove Programs
- On the left hand side of the Add or Remove Programs dialogue box click Add/Remove Windows Components (this may take a little while to load).
- In the new dialogue box scroll to the bottom and uncheck Windows Messenger
- Click Next and wait for it to uninstall Windows Messenger
- Click Finish
