If I need a book I don't go to Waterstones...I go to the supermarket (it's cheaper)

Doing this will severely limit your choice of reading matter, since supermarkets generally have a selection of poor-quality rubbish when it comes to books.

Libraries also often have a very poor choice of books.

Really? Where I live they're fantastic. You could put a request for what you're looking for.

One of our town center car parks charges per quarter of an hour!!! Works out extremely expensive - over £9 just to park there for 3 hours for the theater in the evening!

it's per 10 minutes here for cash and flash parking, and works out at about £7.50 an hour (max 2 hours).

  • Nothing worse than supermarket clothes. I am the reason Debenhams is still in existance.

Our town centre carpark has a 2 hr minimum 0f £1.80. If I want to nip in to a couple of shops for 15 mins this is what I have to pay. I do not go there.

OK OK. I'll open my grumpy mouth again to say I hate to pay for parking as well! I mean, we are mostly talking about our local shops, and we already pay council taxes, so why do councils not realise that local retailers will be much more profitable if they give customers incentives to shop there? I think Britain is ready for a shake-up. I don't want to see people lose their jobs but I do want to see increased competition.

Our town centre is currently very dire, but being developed. Of course, the first thing to finish will not be the Sainsburys- it will be the overpriced new-build flats. They're adding a multi-story car park- which is welcome in regard to the complete lack of parking, but I think that means Pay & Display is practically guaranteed.

I don't think we should have to pay extra to support our local shops.

All the best Friday to everyone.

My small town has free parking. The Council occasionally says that Auditor Recommendations say they are mad not to be making money from parking.

The town is losing more and more shops, however, so charging would really close the whole place down. There are also supermarkets in town where we can park free, so can get to the Library etc, very easily for no cost.

PS - our Library is small, but I still haven't run out of interesting books to read, and you can order books which will be delivered to your library from other areas of the County. An amazing service, and I'm very, very grateful for it (plus newspapers, magazines, computers, WII, DVDs, CDs etc).

PPS - 'grammar' not 'grammer' ;)

    I completely agree.
Our government just don't know what they want. Re: Manchester congestion charge: last year there was a big talk about "parents need to spend more time with their children" and also "Huge shopping centres such as Trafford Park in Manchester are taking business away from small shops in city centres thanks to free parking and convenience... " and this year it goes all: YES, LET'S CHARGE PEOPLE FOR LEAVING THEIR HOUSE, UNLESS THEY GO ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT... So you will spend less time with your children as journey to work is 20 minutes in the car and 1 hour and 9 minutes on the bus and you will definitely go shopping to Shopping Centre because you pay just congestion, not congestion&parking as you would in the town centre!

The same goes for the recession:
Last year - save save save for your old age
This year - spend spend spend - and if you don't, we will make sure your savings will be worths less as the inflation is higher then the interest!
