EDF has advertised the planning application for Consent to construct and operate a combined cycle Gas turbine on land adjacent to an existing power station located at West Burton, Nottinghamshire.
Also another on land adjacent to an existing station at Sutton Bridge Power station.

Gas wholesale cost means that using Gas to produce electricity means that the highest costing energy is being utilised to generate electricity.

The article in the Telegraph on 11.1.06 suggests consumers can do two things to combat the effects of rising energy prices. Switch to a cheaper provider (Martins site has loads of links to companies who can assist with your search.) and use less energy. Again Martins site has loads of ideas on how to save on fuel costs.

There is some interesting reading at http://www.catalyst-commercial.co.uk/
especially about Britains trade deficit for gas and electricity. A lot of manufacturing and Industry are already less profitable in this country because of the cost of energy.

I think the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry should consider the efficacy of building further gas powered electricity generating stations and seek alternative renewable proposals that may have less environmental impact and do not rely on imported gas that is inflating rapidly in price.
People who will to make a representation to the Secretary of State by email to : walter.gusmag@dti.gov.uk or write to Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, c/o Bay 2121, 1 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0ET stating the name of the proposal and the grounds of their representations, no later than 24 Feb 2006.
