Reclassifying a vehicle

Options
Hi,
I bought a Renault Kangoo van for my personal use but on the documents it is marked as a light goods/ commercial vehicle resulting in me paying a higher value tax disk and vehicle insurance, seeing as it only has a 1.2L engine and is only used as a normal car would be, is there a way to change it's use with the DVLA to private car ?

Thanks
Michael

I would have thought no chance it's a van and not a car which ever way you look at it and think of the potential for fraud if it was possible.

No. It's a van. Nothing will alter that fact. What it is used for is wholly irrelevent to its classification with the exception of Private HGV.

The only reason you're paying more insurance is because you're using the wrong insurance company. You need to shop around.

Hintza is correct - the 'light goods vehicle' taxation class is based on the vehicle's construction, which is a van. This can never be changed.

<Guessing> Can't it be reclassified as a private light goods vehicle? I'm not sure if this category exists, but you can certainly have a private HGV - it seems logical that you could do the same with a light goods vehicle?

But since logic has little bearing on real life, probably best to phone the DVLA and ask them. ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I'm fairly sure reclassification is possible.

I had a friend who installed windows and rear seats of his Berlingo van and had it reclassified as a PLG.

Pop into or call your local DVLA office to find out.

But it wasn't a van by then.

Most motorcaravans (except the very small ones) are classed as Private Light Goods Vehicle for road fund purposes and pay a flat rate of £185 a year. Curiously, the larger motorcaravans are classified as Private Heavy Goods and pay £165 a year - strange anomaly.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
