CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE MODEM PROBLEM

I'm having a problem connecting to internet. I get error 680 I have done everything it says in help.I bought a new connection cable but still got the same problem. I don't want to buy a new modem unless i need to. I would be grateful if anyone could advise me please.

hi, it's a generic 56 it's worked ok up now it says it's ok but i don't know what the problem is

Error 680 normally means 'No Dial Tone'.

Perhaps another phone on the same line was off-hook, or your line was out of action for a while?

Either way, if it working now it suggests that the modem itself is fine.

Thanks a lot for your help it's not working i'm currently using a laptop do you think i need a new modem

Try going into Modem Properties and deselect "Wait for dial tone before dialling"

Apologies - misread the original symptoms. Can you connect a phone in place of the modem and see whether or not there IS a dialtone?

Either way, Toxteth has given you one way around the problem; another is to put a command of 'ATX3' in a modem init string as that too disables the dialtone detection.
