BT rental charges - I'm confused!

I've always stayed with BT (no cable choices round here)
The only change I've made in recent months is to go paperfree.
I've just checked my bill online and my rental charges are now £43.69 (or £40.00 inc VAT minus paperfree billing discount)

According to the BT website today their Unlimited Weekend plan has a monthly line rental is £10.27. Even including VAT at 17.5% that doesn't come to more than £37!!!!

I don't know what they're playing at, but am loathe to ring as I know I won't be speaking to someone with the same ethinicity as myself IYKWIM  and I could be sitting waiting for an answer for half an hour. Even if the call is free, I've better things to be doing with my time ;) .

If they're going to start playing games then I'll consider Tesco.

Please, does anyone have any advice????

It's an extra charge for being of a different ethinicity IYKWIM :T

Will hopefully be even more expensive for you next month

That's not what I call constructive advice.

I was trying to be politically correct

Anyway, I don't understand, how have BT sneaked up the prices for rental? Like I said, according to their website they are quoting £10.27 a month, I've paid £11.50

I've paid by direct debit for years and went paperfree last October. We have the free weekend calls through that and free evening/weekend calls through our broadband provider. (trying to keep call charges per quarter to £10 or less)
However, if BT are going to start playing these sort of games we might as well go onto Tesco's anytime - it won't cost us much more and I can talk to friends anytime instead of having to wait! Or ring them back straightaway!

Check the period the charges cover. I think you'll find it's more than 3 months. A number of people have reported BT have been adjusting billing periods and this has resulted in a one-off bill exceeding 3 months.

BTW, VAT is 15% this year.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I'll check about the length of time it's for.
The bill was up to the end of December so VAT is prbably at the old rate.

Is it just for BT customers then?
Is it only when you phone BT on the numbers you ring to get through to them or is it all 0870 and 0845 numbers to anyone?

Thanks for that Heinz. I've checked my bill, you're quite right.

I still wonder how they're charging me at £11.50 a month* when they're quoting £10.27 on their website!! *(DD and paperless billing)

I presume £10.27 includes VAT at 15% because if you add it on the monthly charge would be £11.81.
