Ok! Its time to claim back some money. So far I've discovered I can claim for:
1. Washing my uniform at home
2. Milage allowance relief (am community nurse using own car)
3. Professional memberships
A question about point 3. Can I claim back for membership of the NMC and RCN? And do I do this through my local tax office and how?
Are there any more things I can claim? What about shoes?
Many thanks!

butterfly72,
For maintaining your uniform at home you can claim Flat Rate Job Expenses. You probably already claim this but make sure that you are receiving the right amount. The Inland Revenue mistakenly gave me too little tax relief until I complained. The link below brings up a list of jobs on the Inland Revenue website - just find yours check how much you are entitled to.

If you are a member of a "professional organisation" that is recognised by the Inland Revenue, you can claim tax relief too. This link to the IR website will bring up a list of such organisations. If yours is on it, you can claim. If not, you're out of luck:

Hope this is of some help to you.

This should provide the information you need. There is a form to download to send to your tax office.

I would advise caution here. If you are at the top of the AfC band 7 scale this may mean you are paying higher rate tax. By completing a self-assesment form you will need to declare all your income, and that means bank / building society interest plus share dividends and top-up to 40%. It may not be worth it! Don't forget the NHS has already paid a "generous" £38 towards professional membership where it is required for a post.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Hope is not a strategy...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!
