Changing colour of furniture

I was given a shelving unit and after drilling a few holes i added 4 shelves to it so it will be great for all my CD's. However it is maghony effect and I wanted to change it to black ash effect. Does anyone know the best way to do this? I was thinking of painting it black but I believe that probably won't work as it is a smooth finish.

Any suggestions?

  • Ronseal does a black ash stain ...you could try that, but it may not turn out brilliantly if the shelves are laminate that just looks like mahogany
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)
  • Yes its the mahogony style covered chipboard in flat pack furniture. I'll have a look for it
