Thanks to everyone that has helped me - gotten rid of the Sober Virus, BUT it has left me with a few problems i.e. cannot access the control panel - everytime I click on something in the control panel it comes up with a box that says
Cannot find the file C/WINDOWS/rundll32.exe (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.
Also, since I've had this virus I keep getting a web page come up which I've never heard of - I think it's called WhatUWant - and the only way I can get rid of it at the moment because I can't get into my control panel is to "end task".
Any ideas please?

In your Sober virus thread you say you are running Windows 98 but haven't got the CD.
Do you have a C:\Cabs folder on your hard drive? This is default location where Windows 98 installs its installation files in compressed format.0 -
Thanks for your reply.
I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I cannot see C/Cabs on my C drive. Am I looking in the right place. I'm not too tech minded.
Is my computer b.gger..d?if i had known then what i know now0 -
If your computer was supplied with Windows 98 pre-installed then C:\Cabs is where the Windows files are normally located instead of on the CD. Try searching for *.cab on the whole C: drive.
I don't think your PC is b******* - you just need to reinstall one or two files from the CD or the 'cabinet' file.0 -
If you have a windows 98 cd try searching on that for the file.0

On all of my OEM machines with 9x / ME the cab files are in C:\Windows\Options\CabsHow do I add a signature?0 -
Hi Everyone
I've found the Windows cab file - thanks to you all.
Question. What do I do now that I've found it?
I'm sorry for being so ignorant!if i had known then what i know now0 -
Use the System File Checker tool as described in this article (the link takes you directly to the Windows 98 section).
In Step 4 specify the file you want to restore, i.e. C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe, and in Step 5 browse to the folder containing your cab files. SFC then restores the specified file from the correct cab file.0 -
Hi Chippy
Thanks for your info, but when I go into the link that you sent me and go into run/msconfig and get the General Tab up, there is nothing whatsover what you have mentioned. The following are under my General tab:
Normal start up - load all device drivers and software;
Diagnostic startup - interactively load device drivers and software; and
Selective startup
It doesn't mention what you have said.
Am I doing anything wrong?if i had known then what i know now0 -
Ignore the above - I think I've got it - I should have typed sfc.
THanks - lets hope it worksif i had known then what i know now0 -
HURRAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Thank you soooooo much to everyone who helped - I couldn't have done it without you.
