remember that the auto renew was an option when the pol was taken it can be opted out of.
i know its not a nice situation and that the whole reading renewal thing has been said
but it is true that many people dont read documents through. those that dont auto renew get the renewal about 3 weeks prior and often forget about it. i work in home and motor sales and regulary speak to people who had a policy that lapsed months ago (longest I recall was 9 months) and didnt realise they had no cover.0 -
But every auto-renewal notice I've ever seen says that if you are happy to continue then do nothing and they'll do everything. So if you ignore a letter like this what do you expect to happen? The will renew the policy and expect to be paid. I've got no sympathy for the OP and while getting a default is extreme, ignoring all communications asking for payment is going to lead to this.0
