Next Account - Normal Practice?

Hi Guys

I bought a Christmas present from Next and was surprised at the time to find that instead of paying for it there and then I was told I'd pay for it afterwards when I get an invoice from them.

I've now got a statement and and it's come with a credit agreement and a credit limit.

Is this normal practice? I would've been happy just giving my card details over at the time. I would've thought this was risky practice giving over goods without payment to anyone and risk not getting the money for it.

It seems a strange online selling model.......

i have read on someones elses post about this happening, that was for a large amount too!! im not sure how it happens unless there is a glitch with the system at the time, i have tried tirelessly to get an account with next but always get a no!!

on the hand hubby went on for me to order me something i wanted and he was declined too, that was july last year, then on 1st oct i had a delivery from next, in hubbys name the item he had ordered and an account with limit!! three months after originally trying to order!!!

so i think they are a law unto themselfs really. i know if you have an account it doesnt actually give the option of debit card payment it just presumes you want it on the account.

but for a first order its strange, did you put in that you would have a copy of the directory and get free delivery of your item?? if so thats why, it has infact secretly done an application!!
    self confessed 80's throwback:D
sealed pot challenge 2009 #488 (couldnt tell you how much so far as i cant open it to count it!! )
  • Ah - now I remember that option and said no because the cost of the directory was more than the delivery and i wasn't sure whether I would order anything more for a while anyway. After all - this was the first time I had bought something from Next online anyway.

I think I put a delivery and billing address in before the payment so perhaps it did a quick check and thought they would have a go at setting me up an account in the hope I'd be a frequent customer

Looking through the paperwork sent today there is a credit agreement that i have to sign and send back so I guess I could just not do that, pay what i owe and that would be the end of it.

But what i'll probably do is sign it and send it - and buy more stuff from them at some point.

So, hats off to Next - their strategy worked! :rotfl:

    Sucker? Moi?

i have had a recent strange problem with my next account

on the first day of the sale i duly went to my local store at 5am and bought some goods on my directory card, then about a week later i had a call from my friend who was served after me at the sale to say she thinks i have paid for all her stuff as well, when we checked her receipt i had indeed paid for her stuff !!!

we went into the next store and told the girl who went away to talk to the manager and then said they had checked and i had paid for her stuff and she owed me the money!!

i had to argue that i wanted it crediting from my account as i would pay interest and was told my friend would have to return all the stuff and have it refunded, then buy it back this was a week later when most of it had been worn and washed and none had any tags, after we complained again and said could you not just do it from the receipt she went away to speak to the manager yet again who then agreed to refund me.

what worries me is it had not been a friend behind me i could have paid for any random persons goods who would probably never had let on and by the time my statement arrived how would i have proved that i did not buy the goods

we never saw the manager or got an apology from anyone, for what i consider a huge error that could have cost me hundreds of pounds
  • I had the same problem with Next, I ordered a coat online for Christmas and was expecting to pay by card at the end of the transaction only to find I couldn't. I then realized that I had unwittingly opened a catalogue account with a generous credit limit (with my credit history?).
Oh well, I'll just have to resist temptation.
