....my OH is being made redundant and will only get the basic Job Seekers for 6 months ...despite over 35 years of contributions to this country....but if we had no savings - it would be a another story ...but we will still have our pride (still worth something )
Sorry to here that ES10, there is no doubt the system had good intentions, but unfortunately the way it operates sucks as it is open to abuse which leads to reduced benefit to those who deserve them. Hope your things work out for your OH.

No ES10 job seekers is now means tested!!!! Like you say paid up all NI's but because we have savings, well you know the rest. Fortunately like you we own our house now and yes the mortgage rates were horrendous and we had to have a 10% deposit before we could even think about going ahead with the mortgage.
Is he not entitled to some sort of tax rebate, not the same I know, but you should check and make sure you get anything you are entitled to, since as we all know there are people who ensure they get what they can entitled or not. I know when I left my work to go abroad I was able to reclaim tax, so being made redundant should at least bring something back. I'm was not aware jobseekers is means tested, sadly it doesn't come as a great surprise. I hope things work out for him.

I was under the (apparantly wrong) impression that JSA was paid for the first 6 months based on NI contribution record, and then was means tested after that !!

Is this something else that Gordonomics has 'stolen' from the workers ??

I thought exactly the same as you ...so he phoned the Job Centre (several times!) ...got different answers each time ..but generally was told it was only means tested if it was income based and you did not have enough NI contributions. Ayway knowing us we'll probably get diddly squat ..paid in all our lives but NEVER get anything back ...

...as for tax rebate ...if made redundant towards the end of the tax year and get a redundancy payment ...well it's unlikely you'll get anything back ( trying to get his payment in the next tax year though!!)
