Incapacity Benefit and Part Time Work

 My first ever post. HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP. I receive Incapacity Benefit and DLA and have done for over 2 years. If I get employment is my IB reduced in accordance to my earnings? Also is my DLA taken into account?

I'm applying for a "work at home" job making calls to customers and my hours can be 2 - 12 per week with maximum earnings £72.00. Physically I know I can possibly cope with max 10 hours and I want to try this and find out if I can actually cope with structured work before I venture to the outside world and get back into office work again. I look forward to a response.

  • Hi there
Just happen to see your thread. If you phone the Benefit enquiry line for people with disablities 0800 88 22 00, they maybe able to help you regarding IB and either part-time or permitted work, but I am sure you will get more replys soon. Your DLA should not be affected.
    Regards
  • Hello

As far as I know you can earn up to £92 per week without your incapacity benefit being reduced. I dont think it will make any difference to your DLA as this isn't a means tested benefit.

THe best thing to do is to contact Working Links (the job centre will have their number) and speak to them. They are very helpful.

There are two different classifications of work if you're on IB:-

    Permitted work:

    You can work for

earnings of up to and including £20.00 a week for an unlimited period, or

less than 16 hours a week, on average, with earnings up to and including £92.00 a week for a 52 week period

less than 16 hours a week, on average, and earn up to and including £92.00 a week for as long as your illness or disability is considered sufficiently severe that you are treated as meeting the threshold of incapacity without undergoing a medical assessment

    Supported Permitted Work:

You can work in Supported Permitted Work for earnings of up to and including £92.00 a week for an unlimited period.

Work that is supervised by someone who is employed by a public or local authority, or a voluntary organisation whose job it is to arrange work for disabled people. It includes work done in the community or in a sheltered workshop. It also includes work under medical supervision as part of a hospital treatment programme.

Of course working may affect other benefits such as Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefits

Good luck and let us know how you get on I'd be interested to hear the outcome and how did you find out about working from home, any that I've ever applied to have been pyramid building scams?
    :p
  • Thank you all so much for your replies. I saw the job in the Job Centre Plus website. I've sent off my CV and covering letter there was no website/email address just had to post it. I will let you know how I get on.

TaBunny - Apparently the job is to ring patients reminding them of their appointments. I think it is an Agency so dont know if it is for a private company of NHS. Looks genuine, but so do lots of others.......

I think this maybe the extra one off payment of £60 the Government were giving if you received a £10 Xmas bonus.
  • A friend of mine did some permitted work and she had her housing benefit and council tax reduced.
What she earned in one hand went from the other.

The Government have given it to everyone who is entitled to the £10 Christmas Bonus.

    Enjoy!
