Allotments in Gillingham (Medway) Kent

Here's hoping you lovely folks can help.

We've been on the waiting list with medway council for an allotment for over a year now with no immediate hope of an allotment in sight.

Does anyone know of any vacant/neglected plots in the gillingham/medway area? Alternatively is there anyone who already has a plot who would be willing to share?

The best way to find out about neglected plots is to go and have a walk around the site. Chat to anyone who is about. Make a note if you see any that don;t look workered (bear in mind it is winter) and than contact the council about the waiting list and mention that you have seen unloved plots.

Can you take a plot on a bot further from home? We have been on the list in our area for aout 2 years and we have taken on a very overgrown plot about 20 mins from us. It is with a diffrent council so we stay on the waiting list for the ones closer to home as well.
  • I live in Rainham and my train goes past the allotments just off Ingram Road every night. Bit dark at the moment but I'll look to see if I notice anything for you. My friend on the train has just got one so I'll ask him on Monday what the waiting list was.

  • Just got back from staying at my Mum's looking after her hubbie & her allotment (well eating her veggies anyway :D ). Still no news from the council (no reply from my latest emails and telephone messages from last week).

I will try and get out at the weekend for another recce to see if I can see any plots although most are hidden behind houses and you can't really see the plots from the entrances. You never know I might get lucky (but in my case it is more likely I'll get accused of loitering!).

  • Managed to get through to the allotment people at the council today - we are number 44 on the list for the site nearest to where we live. But there are people on the list who have been waiting since 2006 so we are looking at a wait of at least another 2 years. The lady said allotments only come up when people die - so I imagine it will be a lot longer than 2 years.

I then asked if we could be added to any of the other sites waiting lists and was told we could only go on 2 sites, and that they "had to be in my area". As I live in Gillingham, I can only go on the list for sites in Gillingham (even though I am right close to the border with Chatham) regardless of whether there are shorter waiting lists elsewhere in the medway area.

So it looks as though I am back to trying to see if anyone wants to share their allotment or if anyone know of any sites with waiting lists run by comittee rather than by the council. In the meantime I'll have to try growing in containers on my 2mx2m patio which is shaded by a 2m wall on the south side and the shed on the west. Anyone got any other bright ideas?

I really sympathise, I am number 32 on a list in Sussex! I have already made it clear to the allotment management committee that I am happy to share a plot, but we will see if that gets me anywhere.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • I know the original is an old post, but I have highlighted several sites in Gillingham suitable for Allotments.
Cllr Andy Stamp is pushing for these area's to be available now.
  • Hi I was wondering if you have had any joy in obtaining an allotment? I have been on the waiting list in medway for 3 years and am still number 56

    It is so frustrating

    any luck for you?
