CapitalOne Cred Card -Free Travel Insurance

Thanks to Martin we now have CapitalOne Cards giving 1% cashback but it gets better (or does it?). Now have free Travel Assistance & Travel insurance from Feb providing 75% transport and/or accomodation charged to the card.

Anyone else looked at this in depth? I know CCard Travel cover is usualy poor.

Cannot believe this one is as good as it looks eg £5,000,000 medical expenses, hospital and nursing home expenses etc just like a paid for deal but with no mention of age, destination or pre existing medical conditions!! I was brought up to suspect anything that was too good but I cannot find any snag except perhaps use of "and/or accomodation". Does that mean must either charge "Transport plus Accomodation" or "Accomodation only" but not Transport only?

  • It is a very poorly written document IMO with policies, summary of policies and summary summaries of summary policies.

but some things I picked up on out of the "World MasterCard® Travel Assistance and Travel Insurance benefits" pdf (accessible from your "my account" section of the capitalone website

***NOTE I may have quoted incorrectly (and certainly incompletely) and consequently the information below might be misleading, you must read the document yourself before do anything or making any judgements or decisions*** (Trying to cover my !!! incase some dumass or malicious person reads this).

So after reading the whole document I first think it was intentionally written to confuse, and 2) the cover is ok in places but provides poor cover in other areas?

What does anyone else that has read the whole document think?

  • Thanks RobinGB.
I had not spotted the poor payout on death but that is not too important to me. I am not into skiing, so again no problem. I had already been through the policy backwards as well as forwards and am left with the conclusion its a winner !

  • Thanks RobinGB for your excellent clarification on this. I am also keen to take advantage of this insurance/assistance but nervous as to whether it would hold up if ever needed. I haven't gained much joy from the helpline given and also a little wary of the potential costs to call their 08452 number from abroad.

One query that I would appreciate some advice on if anyone can help:-

Should the need for medical assistance/hospitalisation or other emergency situation arise, I'm assuming from the comments that we would be required to pay in advance (by Capital One CC) and claim retrospectively. Only if the card is lost can an advance be sought. Such costs can be at a greater level than the credit limit on the card. I like to have the reassurance that we are covered for all reasonable unexpected events and wouldn't wish to experience problems at such a time. Can anyone add comment to this please.

Thanks again for all the work undertaken on this.
  • I notice that the Travel Policy Booklet refers to "World Master Card" whilst I enrolled for the Platinum Cashback Card. This was subsequently replaced with one that does not have any title so no proof its the same!

A phone call to Capital might appear to help but its all too important to just rely upon verbal confirmation.
