Central heating etc

Hi
I would like some advice regarding an issue we have at the moment. We have bought a property with an old central heating system. We are going to change the whole thing in time but have been told that there is a problem with it.
Downstairs we he have a "back boiler" fitted inside a chimney breast in our dining room. Apparently there isn't a vent in the room though, and therefore this could be dangerous?
We've got some damp proofing work going on next week for which the plumber will have to turn off the system and remove the radiators, he's telling us that he will not turn the system back on because of this missing vent.
Anyone got any idea what he's referring to?

Thanks, makes more sense.
He was saying it may be more beneficial to have a new boiler installed than to rectify this issue.
Any idea what is classed as a good energy efficient boiler?0 -
It shouldn't be an expensive job to provide a vent although one can't say without more details. I would think it must be a lot cheaper than replacing the boiler. Backboilers are not fashionable and not very efficient but they are basically very reliable. I had one for 35 years with only one breakdown, only changed it because we made a lot of internal changes to the house which made it impossible to keep. In the 15 years since we are on our second boiler and my records show a total of 5 breakdowns - pump, fan, pressure vessel, diverter valve (on both boilers). Progress???0
