a good quality granite co prestige in liverpool. i have used them several times now the last time they templated they fitted the tops the next day.
the one to go for is quartz, it is stain resistant and can be inpregnated with microban.

also i have just fitted tops from homebase they look just like star galaxy, i think a little better.

Ok - so here is daft question of the year! :o

I've had a couple of samples through today and one of them says 'Star Black Engineered Stone with Mirror Fleck'

Erm does that mean it's a Quartz one? :o Or are stone and quartz 2 separate things? :o

Also, just a confirmation please - as I've said, I want a black one that is either mirrored or silver sparkly (i.e not the gold fleck ones), but have been told that you can't get it in Granite - only Quartz, as the mirror/sparkly bit is added whilst being made.

Is that correct, or is there a granite one too?
  • I read somewhere some scientists are studying the radiation that is emitted from granite in the home - for safety reasons I would stay clear of it. (I think it was the possible link between sustained radiation emissions and cancer). People use granite for work tops and fireplaces......

LOL, this hardly warrants an answer but a quick Google search and where does this story turn up? On the website of this load of ambulance chasers

    www.accidentsdirect.com/injury-lawyers-news/12750128-personal-injury-lawyers-encourage-radioactivity-claims.aspx

"Personal injury lawyers in the United States have been advertising on the internet for claimants to come forwards after it has been alleged that some granite kitchen worktops are putting people at risk of radiation poisoning...Despite conflicting reports on whether there is any risk, personal injury lawyers are determined that anyone suffering from radiation poisoning as a result of their worktop will receive compensation. "

Oh well if personal injury lawyers think your worktops going to give you a tumour, it must be right!

    Hilarious!

Thanks for those (erm!) interesting bits of info! Always some know-all in the US that starts these wacky rumours eh?! :rotfl:

No offence and thanks for your advice, but it's not something that concerns me - I'm more likely to be run over by a speeding unicycle than die from worktop exposure - especially with the amount of time I (don't!) spend in the kitchen - that's OH's department. Hmmmm, well actually - it might be worth reading more into this poisoning lark after all! :rotfl:

Now, anyone know the answers to my 2 questions about granite/stone/quartz etc as in post 33 please? Thanks! :D

    Mortgage-free Glee!
    I love my granite worktops.

Mine are Emerald pearl - black with flecks of dark pearl. I love them! I originally put them in because I wanted a reflective surface (the conservatory makes the kitchen a little dark), I put hot pots on them without worrying, I don't get water marks on them, I find them easy to keep clean.

My kitchen is cream and black - its still my favourite room after five years.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Yeah, thanks roddydogs - I found that firm a couple of weeks ago too.

i.e. - a couple of weeks AFTER I'd thrown my old tops away! :rotfl:

    Bugg3r!!! :)

They will also install from scratch ie without existing worktops.
