Where to sell rare books

Hi everyone, I have just sold some books on Ebay, used 5p listing day, and am disapointed with the results. A book for sale with a shop at £49 failed to reach the £20 starting bid. Several others only made a pound or two or did not sell even at 99p. I have quite a few more so where can I place them?

Have you looked at Amazon? Always worth looking to see what the proper sellers have priced it at, (ignore the mega listers they get crazy prices sometimes) but also check out rankings.

Also to see if a book is truly rare or not try checking it out on bookfinder.

If they are especially rare, have you tried specialist auction houses? I know it is possible to sell stuff on Amazon and etc, but you may find you get a better (and less stressful) way to get money visiting somewhere.

Also thinking about this since you say these books are 'rare' I assume you did some research beforehand. if so, where did you research and did that site have any selling portal you can use.

An ebay seller with a shop offering a copy of a book for £49 doesn't make it rare or even expensive, it just means they feel that is the right level for that book, if there are no completed sales on ebay it rather suggests their pricing isn't quite right.

£49 books are not really expensive enough for specialist auction houses..but a book fair might be a possibility where you can pay £25 or so (it really depends on venue) and sell a table load of books that might not otherwise sell on places like ebay.

Thanks for replies, will look at Amazon, thought it was for professional sellers. The books are for sale at various booksellers, they are early Biggles, a book by Mike Hawthorn etc.

Any one can sell on Amazon but even apart from that it is useful for checking out not only prices but whether the book actually sells or not. If you have an ISBN then it is easy to search, if not ask over on the Amazon thread (or here) and one of the Amazon sellers will give you a hand I'm sure.

How do you find out if something on Amazon sells or not, and how much it sells for?

  • I buy antique (not neccesarily rare) books and like to be able to examine them in person before handing over cash- I think many people are the same. High postage charges are also having a big impact on eBay book sales. You may do better selling to a dealer- you won't get the full value, but more than 99p! Auction is also a good idea, although selling high is always dependant on how many interested people turn up on the day.
