LPG conversion - good idea?

Hubby has found a nissan almera 2002 1.5 pertol 38000miles for £1900 and they will trade current car.
he can get the conversion kit £550 and friend to convert for £200.

So total car £1750 (taken off trade in)

Do you think this is a good deal?

At the mo i do 50 miles a day and costs me lots of money in diesel. So we're thinking trade in hubbys car and he can have my 307 diesel estate as he does less miles.

Would it be a lot cheaper running LPG? we can get it at a few garages locally and 1 near by my work so should be fine and can always have the petrol for reserve.

advice welcome

Katie

don't these things need to be fitted professionally, preferably with some kind of certificate?

We paid £1500 each to get our cars professionally converted about 4 years ago. It was worth it for us, based on our mileage then as both cars have now repaid the cost of conversion (infact OH's paid for itself within a year). Not sure that the difference between LPG and petrol is big enough these days. When petrol was at its highest, the cheapest LPG we could find was 53.9p, now petrol has come down by 30p per litre, LPG has only dropped by 10p

We had an LPG conversion, and it was the best thing we ever did.

You can install it yourself. However for the insurance on your car to be valid, it has to be checked professionally.

You also need to tell your insurance company and DVLA of change of fuel to dual fuel.

They're safer than petrol! There's a gas release valve, so if the vehicle catches fire the gas is released as a stream out the back of the car, not an explosion. And they're designed to be crumpled in an accident and not rupture. More than can be said for a petrol tank, which leaks fuel all over a hot exhaust and then blows up! I'd feel safer with a tank of gas than 60 litres of petrol!

Don't think you will get a big saving on fuel by paying out £750 for the conversion for the sake of 50 miles a day.

The Almera aint the most interesting car either. Try and find a nice Astra 1.7 diesel, as they seem to run on fresh air...
  • Hi there
If you look at my other posts. LPG conversion has been mentioned in the past. I had my 2litre car professionally converted in 2005 costing £1400 with a switchover from petrol to LPG and viceversa, it was installed in the boot, thus losing a bit of space. you do get a certificate for insurance purposes and it is serviced and stamped every 12 months, but it has been money well spent.
