Unknown payment to my credit card

in Credit cards
Hi,
On January the first I had a payment made to my credit card, which nearly clears the balance. (the payment was for over £3 Thousand)
I did not make the payment, and have called round and no family member made it. (No one could afford that)
I have checked with my bank and made sure that I did not accidentally add some 000 to a payment I made to my credit card, and they confirm I did not and my bank accounts are fine.
I rang the credit card company several times and they say that they cannot tell me any information about the payment made to the card.
So... what do I do?
1- I just made another payment to the card, so it will have £0 on it in the next day or so. So I could cancel the card....couldnt I?
2. Or keep the card and keep waiting to see if the £3k is suddenly added back on.
Also... wont my interest rate change as if they do re-instate the 3K surely that would be counted as a new transaction...so I should get a month or 2 with no interest shouldnt I? I should at least have no interest payments for the next month.
And.... if its a credit card company mistake...how is that possible?
Hope you can help.

Thats a nice problem to have. however I suspect at some point the source of the £3000 will be figured out and it will be taken back and the balance put back on the card.. So I would save the money you would normally pay off the card until such time as its needed.0

It was me, I was feeling generous. Enjoy.0

It's probably someone else's balance transfer.
The company have 6 years to claim it back and it's likely someone will be miss it.
If you want to use it to save interest short term then great, do so,
But DON'T spend it.
It's likely to be asked for and legally you have to pay it back.
You do not have to pay back any interest gains you make.
Whether you clsoe the card or not makes no odds.
They still legally have 6 years.
My guess is someone did a balance transfer and put in a digit wrong.
Very unlikely they won't notice if the mistake is by an individual.0 -
ah it is all sorted.
My Capital One Credit Card came through today and when I activated it they told me they had automatically taken ther balance from my other cards (barclaycard and egg) as the reason I said I was applying for their card was for balance transfers.
I did not remember/realise it would happen automatically.
Weirdly... despite being turned down by others cards, and even turned down by Egg for a balance increase from £500-£700... Capital gave me a credit limit of £5700 with an interest rate of around 12 % for 3 years or so.
Better than what I am on thats for sure. (but of course I wont use the limit... I will just pay off this card and cancel my others)
Thanks for the help.0
