Filling fallen out and dentist not available until end of month?

Can somebody recommend what do I do please if I lost a filling yesterday, rang my dentistry today and they're saying the dentist's ill and no appointments until end of month at least. The tooth's nagging, bearable at the moment but already worse than yesterday and struggling to eat and drink:( Are there any places I can go with a stuff like that..? Google's not helping much. Thank you

Are you a private or NHS patient?

If you're NHS, ringing up NHS direct, or your local PCT should give you dentists who are contracted to provide emergency sessions. This should get you some sort of temporary relief.

if your dentist is private, they really should have some sort of cover available, but bear in mind that illnesses can strike suddenly and be quite severe - so I wouldn't go stomping your feet and getting too shirty unless you know the full story here.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Wave 100 quid under the dentists nose they'll soon do the job;)

    Yawn

I think the OP was after constructive advice. If the dentist is off work ill, I doubt £100 will make much difference.

OP, I work in an out of hours service for my PCT. We do temporary fillings and pain relief and such like. There will be a service but you may have to sit and wait for it, call them up and see. I work on weekends but other trusts may vary. Don't just leave it though.
  • Thanks for your advices. It's NHS dentistry. I believe they only have one dentist and understandably anybody can get ill as you said, so I was just wondering what people do/would do in a case like that. I may ring NHS direct tomorrow, thanks for the advice. What is PCT sorry?

    PCT = Primary care trust.

What used to be your local health authority several name changes, and many expensive new logos ago.

You used to be able get some stuff from the chemist which acts as a temp filling. May be worth a try if you are struggling but ring NHS direct they should be able to put you onto a dentist who can help.

just ring your dentist and ask for the number for the emergency dentist in your area. on the nhs no one is registered anymore so even if he/she was in they're not obliged to see you unless you have a open course of treatment
  • They sell a dental kit in boots for about £10 with some temp filler. Should help you out until you get to see someone.
I am very lucky to have a fab dentist who has always slotted me in on the day whenever anything goes wrong.
    Good luck x
  • I just went through a really bad week with nasty toothache too. I did get to see my dentist but at first neither of us could tell which tooth the pain was coming from. I used clove oil (sparingly) on my gums - its tastes horrid but it is numbing. I also got a gel from the chemist which had something in it that numbed the pain for a while too. In the end I had to get prescription painkillers from my doctor and crawl back to the dentist. It was an inflamed nerve in one of my teeth. He removed the filling, added some kind of antibiotic and steroid paste and put in a temporary filling which will last for up to two months. As suggested above, why not try getting one of the temporary filling kits from the chemist - at least it will stop food and temperature irritations?
  • My dentists will see you the same day if you tell them you have toothache, could you lay it on a bit?
