Just been looking on the Scot Rail site and noticed that they are offering train travel for over 55's anywhere in Scotland for £15 return, plus £2 off for senior rail card holders and upgrade to first class for £4, up till the end of March, journey can start in Carlisle. A few restrictions at peak times out of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Sound like a bargain to me. Tried out Carlisle to Mallaig comes out at £15 return, £13 with SRC, £17 1st class. Pity it would cost me £66.40 to get to Carlisle in the first place but handy for anyone living further north.
