  • I am a little concerned about the security of my job in retail. My oh has only seasonal work and is now out of work for 3 months and signing on with an agency but with little hope of a job considering the competition at the moment. Gas and electric prices have rocketed and food is more expensive. On the upside my mortgage will be paid off in a few months and petrol is cheap at the moment. And good bargins to be had in the sales. Not too worried.

Or like being in an airport:

Me: I'll have a cup of tea and a sandwich, please.
    Cashier: That's be £21.34, please
    Me: O*&^CF!

And you just know it will be a dreadful bacon sandwich too. And the tea will be cold and have too much milk in it.

No. I felt I got over the odds for it. I never liked it, it had a lot that needed doing and I had no money for it. There were no jobs where I lived (median salary stats for that area showed £15k/year - and that would have been hard to find, probably solicitors/bank managers/hotel owners/club owners brought that figure up).

What I've banked -v- how prices have dropped have effectively given me £70k or more banked than I'd get today. So I've gained from that perspective.

Although I have no base, nowhere I call home, no roots. Which makes it difficult to know where to be/live. Until I have a job/some roots, I won't feel able to do more interesting things like committing to study or an evening class or something that needs you to be settled.

So, quids in, but mentally a bit lost.

What an honest response and interesting to hear that you don't feel you have a base as such. Did you move areas when you sold up too then?

You would think now oil is cheaper so would be the price of fuel?

As hard working educated DINKies in (hopefully!) secure jobs we are better off than we have ever been.

I'd never heard this acronym before. Intially I thought it made me a SINKie but decided I'd rather be a SLINKie (Single Large Income No Kids!!)

I pay national insurance in my paid job
the plan is ( and I hope that I don't need to use it ) if I lost my job I would throw everything into making the card business bigger and better, at the moment its earning a tiny bit of profit but its more of a hobby really.

    Hi Sunrise

I think you could build this into a nice little business. I run a few businesses and the ones I most enjoy are my 'hobbies'.

Personally, I am not a big believer in cards...I never send Christmas Crads, but understand that most people do.

I wouldn't give anything up, but maybe look at expanding this on a part-time level and see where it goes.

With regards to the initial question.

I have businesses which profit from the credit crunch and those that suffer. Equals out really

Suppose having fingers in pies is the answer

    >I think it costs them about £50k<

That's probably DV level (the top) where they speak to a range peeps right back to those you knew at Uni. They're paranoid you may be a closet homosexualist. I knew somewhat who applied and they knew he'd not long split with his partner. At the interview their first question was "So, you must be downloading a lot of p0rn?"; it's all mind games.

A Basic Check isn't much more than the CRB do for teachers etc.

my 'little ' business is building up nicely already and I have lots of new ideas that I think could go well
we are going to start attending school summer fairs as well in the hope we sell some but also get our name out there as well
all I need now is a bit more time to get all the ideas made and out there

I work for a large company but they have a freeze on recruitment. The part of the business I work in has lost quite a few million pounds so they are on a cost cutting exercise. 300 people were made redundant the last Friday before christmas and they will be forming a new company so I will be TUPED. I fear that the department I work in may be next and because of the freeze in recruitment I can`t jump ship and change departments. On the plus side, I am a trained nurse so if I do get made redundant I can do the course so I can practise again. The redundancy pay will cover the fees.

My mortgage has gone down as I am on a tracker but I have kept the payments the same. I prepared myself to go on the SVR in December 08 so I started to reduce my outgoings a year ago. I also capped my gas and elec last Feb before the prices went up.

If I can keep this job and the interest rates remain low then I will pay my mortgage quicker. I won`t be booking a holiday or making any unnecessary spending until I can see that the cost cutting exercise they have made at work will stop the rest of us from being made redundant.
  • Had an interesting lunchtime at work - all the 'comfortably off' people who normally have 2-3 foreign holidays a year talking about £9.50 holidays in The Sun (staying at Haven, etc).

I need a Schadenfreude board......definite change in the air.
