Everything AND the kitchen sink

I'm on the Flylady thread, just started today, because I have to take control of the state of the house. I have a couple of questions and I know they're probably daft but I don't know the answer and it's bugging me..so I'm overcoming my embarassment and asking you OS'ers for advice
First. The kitchen sink. I moved into my new house a couple of months ago. The sink is a rather posh one so I don't want to damage it. It's stainless steel, but it has a couple of rust stains on it (huh?? lol). How do I get rid of them? I've tried rubbing hard with my microfibre cloth and stardrops etc but nothing is shifting those marks.
My second question about the sink is a daft one...It's a one and half bowl sink. I don't understand the point of this. What am I supposed to do in the half bowl bit??
It also has a removable strainer thing in it. I've had a double bowl sink previously but I'm completely missing the point of the half bowl.
Next question - I have a very trendy black glass hob set into the worktop. To be sure the thing can look super cool
but I have trouble getting and keeping it clean. Anyone have one of these and any tips? It seems to show every single mark so easily. I read the manufacturers info and can't see where it gives cleaning instructions. I don't want to damage it.

hey i can heelp you on what the half bowl is for as im still trying to figure what mine is for, i use mine to put my scrubber, dishcloth in lol, as regarding the rust, try using tinfoil, crazy as it sounds i have used it in the past and its worked fine, when youve used it dry it and wipe some oil over it, put a dab on kitchen roll and wipe over. for the hob i use hob brite a little goes a long way. i hope that that helpsIf we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

the half bowl is for rinsing, you fill your main sink with your soapy water and have the tap running over the small sink. that way you can wash and rinse without getting an overfull bowl!
oh and also for your hob... hobrite is brill as suggested. you can also buy scrapers for ceramin hobs. they look like razor blades but dont waorry they wont scratch. lifts the burnt on dirt right offWhat matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
The half bowl is for rinsing stuff off in and for veg and salad prep (hence the strainer) and things like that.
Also, it means that when you need to tip things down the sink but the big bowl is full you're sorted!

I use the half sink bit for rinsing, peeling veg and for draining cutlery when I'm doing the pots - glad to find out that these are the things that it's meant to be used for!
No idea about cleaning your hob though, sure someone'll be along with an OS solution before long!GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -
I use good old bicarb for cleaning my hob, it works fine unless I've left it too long between cleans, then I have to scrape VERY carefully with a kitchen knife.
And today I was really wishing I had a half bowl sink when I had loads of stuff soaking in the sink but wanted to tip some yukky water away.0 -
The manufacturers of my ceramic hob recommended Astonish cleaning paste. Looks (and feels) quite abrasive but doesn't damage the surface. The only thing you need to watch for is that you don't scrub too hard. I agree, they can look really good, but take a bit of work to keep them that way.
I guess bicarb would work just as well (I'm only using Astonish because we had to replace the oven/hob when we moved in six months ago...will revert to bicarb soon!).
For the stainless steel sink, I'd also recommend bicarb - used to use it on the sink in my old house. It works really well on the rust stains (no, I don't know why they call it stainless either), and I found that it would dissolve before I scrubbed too hard and marked the sink.

I use Starclen for the hob, the cupboard fronts, the cooker hood, as it is very very good with greasy marks."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I use the little half sink bit for rinsing and for tipping things in, eg if someone fetches me a cup to wash with a bit of tea left in the bottom, while I've got a sink full of clean washing up water i wouldn't want to put the last bit of tea in my clean water!0

Our half sink bit is used for keeping the plugs, dishcloth & scrubby sponge thing in LOL! My best friend uses hers to drain the cutlery in. Hob Brite is fantastic so are the little scrapers, which are also great at getting paint off windows after messy painters like me have blobbed it everywhere!!0

Shows how clueless I am - I didnt even know it was a ceramic hob...lol
I've decided to use the half sink for veg rinsing, the strainer is going to live in a cupboard though until I actually have some veg to rinse. Will have a look round for Hob Brite if my Astonish doesnt work on my hob.
Thanks all0
