Where to invest lump sum for our babies

Our childrens (age 5 months and 3 years) grandparents want to give us £5000 to invest for each of our children until they are 18 or 21. Most savings accounts I have seen are for regular payments into an account, but this wont be happening in our case. Any pointers in the right direction would be welcome.

if you look under martins articles for investments, the first step is an ISA, i know you can open these in childrens names...:A Boots Tart :A0

Thank you, I didn't realise you could open an ISA for children. We just seemed to be getting pushed toward other types of accounts. I'll give it a look.0

I know not a savings account exactly, but have you thought about Premium Bonds? My grandpa gave some to me when I was born (and I have added to them as I have got older), and my gran gave them to my boys when they were born. We have all had winnings (not the £1m, but £100 or £50 every now and again).0
