Halifax Card Care

Well.......2009 has started brilliantly. I checked my Halifax credit card account yesterday to make sure the payment I made at the end of Dec had gone through to find that I was over the limit and had been charged £12 because of it. Checking into this a charge of £50 had gone out to Card Care from the Halifax. Now they charged me £35 for this in 2006 and I rang them and told them I didn't want it. So I went into the branch where I was told they couldn't help me and I needed to use the phone which doesn't work very well and had to stand in the middle of the branch answering my security questions in a loud voice. After explaining everything to the lady who answered she told me she would have to put me through to the Card Care department. The man who answered from the Card Care department was not very nice, he was very patronising and more or less accused me of being an idiot when I told him I had cancelled this service. Aparently there were "no notes on his system to say I had called in". After I explained again that I didnt want this Card Care protection I was basically told "tough" I have paid it now and it will cover me till 2011 but he will make sure that I don't get rebilled in 2011. Wow! thanks very much. So now I have to find some money to put back onto my credit card so that I'm back in credit again. I would do a balance transfer to another card but my credit history is not the best from a bad spell 6 years ago and I can't get another card.

Is there anything I can do or do I just have to put up with this?

I suggest you write to them stating that it was cancelled in 2006 and that if they do not remove the charge and refund you the £12 over limit charge then you will have to refer the matter to the insurance ombudsman.

Next you need to work out a plan to stop using your credit card, so the balance starts coming down well below the limit.

    Good luck
