I seem to remember someone raising this a couple of days ago and there was a response that it's just to allow the store to do it's stocktaking - once this was done "normal service would be resumed"!

Ordering just stopped for the Christmas period. Normally when something is pre-reduced (going into the sale), you cannot order it even though it's still full price and as so much of the stock goes into the sale there isn't much point leaving the ordering system open.
Thats what I think anyway :p...... Nothing to do with stores closing though I know that!!

The stocktake for M & S stores is next month.
Ordering resumes tomorrow-however M & S is starting a trial with stores in certain areas ( think it is North East) where customers cannot order instore and have to order through internet.

Think you are right i am in the North East and visited Local store today and large banner up at refund desk stating no instore ordering, looks permanent as part of the background boards too
