I am looking at buying my son one of the new design ipod nano which is on the apple site in various colours and is available in 8 or 16GB for £107 (probably will not buy it direct from apple, hope to find it cheaper). Please can anyone tell me what generation these are. The reason I ask is because I have just bought him a jvc ux-gp5 micro system which is supposed to support ipod. When I read the instruction info it states it supports 4th generation 20GB/40GB, 3rd generation 4GB/8GB, 2nd generation 2GB/4GB/8GB. It doesn't mention 4th generation 8 or 16GB. Need to know if the 2 are compatible otherwise jvc will have to go back. Thanks

the new (9 colours, tall and thin) ipod nano's are the 4th gen..0

Does that mean 4th generations are only available in 8GB and 16GB? Instructions state 20GB and 40GB are compatible for 4th generation.0

It looks as though it only works with older iPods.
iPods used to use a technology called Firewire for syncing music and charging. In an effort to make iPods smaller and reduce costs, Apple get rid of Firewire for syncing and only used USB instead. However, these devices could still charge using Firewire.
For the latest generation of iPods, Apple removed the ability to charge using Firewire. This meant that older docks will no longer be able to charge the iPod, as manufacturers still continued to produce docks which used Firewire for charging. They should still be able to play music with them, but not charge.0 -

This is what it's compatible with:
– iPod nano 1GB/2GB/4GB
– iPod nano (2nd Generation) 2GB/4GB/8GB
– iPod nano (3rd Generation) 4GB/8GB
– iPod mini 4GB/6GB
– iPod (4th Generation) 20GB/40GB
– iPod photo (4th Generation) 20GB/30GB/40GB/60GB
– iPod video (5th Generation) 30GB/60GB/80GB
– iPod touch (1st Generation) 8GB/16GB
The latest model it is fully compatible with was released in September 2007.
It will play music through the new Nanos, it just won't be able to charge them.0
