Cheapest VHS to DVD solution?

Hi all, Has anyone out there converted VHS to DVD? If so how did you do it and was it easy? My old man wants to convert (back up) around 50 VHS tapes. He has a PC but it's not very powerful. I see that there are usb devices that one can connect between a VHS and PC, has anyone got any thoughts on these? Failing that, where can I get a VHS to DVD copying machine that won't break the bank? A lot of questions I know, thanks for reading. Zahc

Best bet is stand alone dvd recorder, you can get them from around £50 up.
One thing to take into account is MACROVISION. Basically its copy protection for ovies. some have it some dont, if its home movies or taped off telly you will be fine.

Thanks. They are his beloved, and quite rare, aircraft videos. They are commercial so may have this macrovision. Zahc

They may have but to be honest the licence for macrovision was a hell of a lot of dosh so it was pretty much limited to blockbuster movies etc.

You could always buy a cheap dvd recorder and try it and take it back if it doesn't work

I dont know if this would be a good option for you but it might be an alternative.

You get Roxio Creator 2009 and the Roxio Video Capture addon for £39.99 from Costco so pretty much everything you would need. Can also be used for transferring old vinyl and tapes as well using the same leads if your hi-fi supports them or with an adapter

    Roxio Creator 2009

    Movie capture addon

They both come in at just under £85 on the website so a saving of £45

    Minimum System Requirements:
    • Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Basic, Windows® XP SP2 (32- or 64-bit), 1 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM
    • 1024x768 DirectX 9 compatible graphics card with at least 16-bit color setting, sound card, DVD-ROM drive
    • Hard drive with at least 3 GB free space for installation
    • Windows Media Player 10
    • Internet Explorer 7. Internet connection required for registration, product updates, and some features. Any Internet charges are the user's responsibility
I wouldnt say it was too demandin and i would even hazard a guess that his "Very Slow" computer as you say might be up to it (Even though he says its "not very powerful")... Unless specs are posted then we may never know. What makes you think it is NOT a viable option?????

Only thing I could see being a problem would be a lack of a USB2.0 port but thats easily fixed
