Difference in gas meters ?

I had a look at the gas meter this morning and was shocked by the figure on it but no i am wondering if meters have changed in some way. Basically we had a new meter fitted here when we moved so it was set at 00000 it now reads 307 units, the meter was only fitted in december so that is a reading for 1 month basically.

At my last house a reading between 6 months (over winter) came to 416 units

You can see my shock, i have nearly used the same over a month as i would use in 6 months at the last place, bearing in mind that meter would have been 10 years old do they have a different way of displaying units or is Eddie syphoning off my gas somehow ???

Ohh, i expect to use a bit more gas as this house is colder, bigger but the gas man said when he serviced it the boiler was incredibly efficient for a non-condenser boiler (last house did not have a condenser boiler either) We also ran the gas overnight for a few days to dry/heat the place before we moved in.

Do i need to see ocean finance to pay my gas bill or is it just a different system to my last house ????

Meters can be in cubic meters or cubic feet. Your current meter should be marked to indicate what it is. Your old bill should show if your meter was cubic meters or cubic feet before.

New meters are metric (1 unit = approx 11kwh) and older are imperial (1 unit = approx 31kwh).

Expect that's the explanation and you can give ocean a miss.

I am not sure now, looks like it was a metric meter at last place - here is a bit of the bill :

    Oh dear!

I think you're using about the same as we did (family of six in three bed house with someone home all day) for December.

There are 4 of us in a 3 bed bungalow, i am hoping it is a one off month esp with the fact we did have the heating on for 24hours for a few days.

I am at home in the day until monday so i sometimes flick it on, the wife always is cold so if she is here it is on. Other than that the water + heating come on from 6.30 - 8.30 and the heating from 5.30 - 9.30 !

I best get the cavities filled ASAP as the house is cold, esp the walls !

Out of interest what is your monthly cost for your gas if on similar units used ?

OK, have checked my records and in Dec we used:
    week 1 = 34 units (imperial)
    week 2 = 36 units
    week 3 = 24 units
    week 4 = 25 units

It went down, (I think), because we had carpets laid and curtains up in all bedrooms in the second week of December. May have been other things too. Our online bill shows 28 days of December at 3750kwh and cost us £104.14 before discounts and VAT.

    Right following on !

In the last hour with just the heating on it has used over 1 unit - as in the meter read 318.xxx and is now 319.xxx

Is that right, it just seems really high to me ? I wouldnt mind if the house was baking hot and i had a way to reduce it, this is with a bloody cold house and no way of reducing it :(
