Given the light of the current economy I am finally contemplating mortgage payment cover for redundancy - any tips on type of cover or cheap providers?

Look at quality, not at cost as your priority. Paying cheap may make you feel cosy when you dont claim but having a policy that isnt as good when you need to claim soon makes that cosy feeling go away.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
