taskbar problem - volume icon disappeared!

Hi all,

for some reason the volume icon from the right hand side of my taskbar has disappeared! this is the icon that lets you adjust or mute the speaker volume.
whats happened to it! help! how do I get it back.....?
my laptop runs vista home premium
can you keep any answes simple please as I'm not very techie!

    This happened to me a couple of times. If you right click on the task bar, select PROPERTIES and then NOTIFICATION AREA. The options are displayed there. However the Volume has been greyed out and I found that a quick reboot solved it
    It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical
