Substitute for Honey

2

Comments

  • There is only a tablespoon on honey in the recipe but I'd rather really use something else because of the advice I've been given regarding honey. I was thinking about maybe putting some apple puree or similar in, the recipe does have milk and egg in it too so the honey must just be for the sweetness rather than to bind the mixture.

I know that he does need some sugar but I'd rather he got his sugar from fruit etc than me adding extra!

Thank you all for your advice!

Apple puree is good, I have used baby food in cakes before too and it worked.

    You're cooking the cake, yes?
Won't this kill the botulism spores? Personally, I really don't know, but wouldn't you'd think? It would be interesting to know.

Very little kills botulism spores. Not even bottling. Also the toxins still exist after cooking. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botulism

I would just try it completely without anything extra then..

Let us know how it goes? And will you share your adapted recipe if you have got time?

Well I made the cakes and didn't replace the honey with anything in the end as it tasted really sweet with just the banana in! They haven't been tested yet as they were too hot for little man's lunch and he's having a nap now so will let you all know the verdict after dinner!!

Clostridium botulinum spores are very resistant to heat. They are killed by the time/temperature/pressure combination in canning, but that's why homemade bottling of flavoured oils (chilli/garlic) is not good as there's a risk of the spores surviving and producing the toxin which causes a serious paralytic illness.

There was an outbreak of botulism in the UK associated with Hazelnut yogurt in the late 1980s

This is a bugbear of mine! Really hard to find squash etc for my little one that isn't "sugar free"! When I see "sugar free" I read it as "full of artifical sweeteners" which are yuk in my opinion!
    Sarah,
I give LO water or milk most of the time, but if we want him to have some 'juice' I just dilute a tiny amount of fruit juice with water. We normally have a carton of fruit juice open in the fridge but if you don't use that then you can get a small (200-250ml) carton and use that to dilute and you could drink the rest :). Re the honey thing I might use some brown sugar, less refined than white but still sweet enough, maybe us a little less and limit his muffin intake ?

Hi Sam, can you please share your recipe with us? I think my son would like banana cake but I don't have a recipe.

I don't add sugar or other sweeteners to his food and he seems to still enjoy it so even though mine is now 13 month I still wouldn't add honey.

    Thanks

    Vicki
