Short UK break

I'm getting a few days off work Friday to Monday or Tues/Weds/Thurs - not entirely sure yet, find out tomorrow all being well.
I live in Hertfordshire and want to go somewhere for a few days, ideally not London as we're so close.
We want things to do nearby (not shopping really!).
Any suggestions???

I think york is a lovely place to go. I know a cheapish place to stay aswell if your interested. Always wanted to stay there but never got around to it
only been for a day at a time. Also if you go look into a york card, if gives you free entry to loads of places and discounts of others. Well worth the money if your gonna go to the places.

I'd dig out some links for this area than:
http://www.parkholidaysuk.com/ - various holiday parks around the SE, parks tend to be basic, but than if you are just using them as a base they can be.
Beautiful Rye - http://www.visitrye.co.uk/ - cobbled streets, a market every Thursday and plenty of unique little shops, ie, two small greengrocers, two petshops, etc.
Battle - Home of the Battle of Hastings - http://www.battle-sussex.co.uk/ - All about Battle. You have Yesterdays World there and the Battle Abbey.
Eastbourne - good for shopping if you fancy it http://www.visiteastbourne.com/
Hastings - Has the Blue Reef acquaruim http://www.bluereefaquarium.co.uk/hastings.htm (I always like to visit places like this when I on holiday). It also has smugglers adventures, but aimed more at the younger market
