37" Panasonic Plasma or LG LCD?

Hi

I'm trying to buy a new TV, a good allrounder as the main TV for the lounge, preferably a 37" but possibly a 32". I thought I had settled on the LG32LG5020 (or 5000) after seeing it in Richer Sounds for £379 because it had good contrast and a smooth picture on moving objects.

I really liked the look of the plasma screens in Richer Sounds too because they looked so clear and vibrant but ruled them out because they were too expensive. Also they only had 1 LG 32" and said that the next size up was 42" (too big for us - 37" is a stretch!)

However, since I got home I've seen this Panasonic TH-37PX8BA plasma at Amazon for £419 which has thrown a spanner in the works!

I'm trying to compare spec but not getting very far, I think because of the differences between LCD and Plasma...can anyone help? Which do you think might be best for us and the best buy? We will be viewing SD most (all) of the time.

I thought I'd learnt quite a lot about TV's over the past few weeks but I feel like a beginner again now!

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thank you & happy new year

Murray

For pretty much anything a Panasonic will be better than an LG.

My mother has the 42 inch PX80 - excellent tv. Plasmas are better for sd and sports especially.

If you want one get it soon as they are due to be replaced with the new models which will no doubt be more expensive!
  • Panasonic. I ended up buying a LG at Richer because they ran out of Pannies. It's "nearly" as good but I'd prefer the Panny.

I think the PX80 is higher spec than the PX8 which is the one that I'm looking at but the PX80 is £550ish rather than £420 for the PX8 - I'm not sure that it is worth the extra money for us because we aren't particularly techie minded! Also, we will be upgrading from a very good but over 10 year old CRT so I'm hoping the spec of the PX8 will be sufficient.

Thanks for all of the advice!

Murray. The PX8 is a 'good' solid tv. probably the best you can buy for the money. But the PX80 is a 'great' tv. And is certainly worth the extra outlay in my opinion (Your basically paying for quality). I suppose it depends how much you would use the tv. Every so often ~ buy the 8, every day ~ buy the 80 :)

Richer sounds were doing the TH37PX80B for £480 last week and Empire were doing it for £500. If you can strecth to it, it's a great set. I have one and so does my mother after seeing ours.

BTW the 32" LG plasma is well regarded and can be had for £360 online. Bennetts have it for £399 but they give you 10% off your first order if you sign up for an email newsletter.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • I ordered the Sony KDL32V4000U from www.bennettsonline.co.uk over 10 days ago, paid in full, received email to confirm dispatch in 2-5 days, but as of now still don't have my TV. What's worse, I have no replies to my emails, and despite lots of attempts to contact them by phone, I get put through to an automated 'all lines are busy' message, only to be cut off after 5minutes! Getting rather anxious now; if they're another victim of the credit crunch then I can kiss my £329 goodbye! PLEASE BEWARE!

I think that whether you choose LCD or Plasma is very much a personal choice as you will no doubt find good and bad reviews about almost every TV around.

I looked at both Plasma and LCD before Christmas and ended up getting LCD because in my opinion the picture and colour was better on both sets purchased. (42LG7000 and 32LG3000).
There will be no doubt other people who will disagree with me.
Take a look at both and get the one you think is best.
