I've managed to get past step 1 already - remove 1st byte of the tgz file and it upacks into a single file called "dummy" that contains a file list then loads of binary stuff, 130 M worth. It's getting the 2nd step done that flummoxing me!

Don't remove the first byte. Just try gunzip'ing the file with the gunzip program from here:

    http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/gnuwin32/gzip-1.3.12-1-bin.zip

Then untar with the command I said above, tar is here:

    http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/gnuwin32/tar-1.13-1-bin.exe

The links are to the installers for windows versions of the programs.

Absolutely frikkin' brilliant Lorian, I simply downloaded tar per above, ran the tar command on a dos prompt as you suggested on my already extracted 'dummy' file (no need to use Gunzip...). And I finally I got back all the original files in their directory structures onto my XP lappy.

MSE scores again as THE place to ask no matter how abstruse the question!

Will post the full procedure on my Hosting co's Forum as I'm sure others will be intereted too.

No problem. I'm not so clever with Linux GUIs but 20 odd years using the command line counts for something.
