DIY Shoe Repairs

Is this taking moneysaving too far?

The heels on my excellent 19 euro (reduced price in Italy) have worn after 6 months. I've replaced heels myself in the past with wollies versions, but they last 2 months if I'm very lucky and cost about £3. The local shoe repaier charges £8, but my wife assures me they last longer.

Does anyone know where I could get decent supplies to do them myself, please?

or should I stop wasting time and pay the repairer? ;)

Thanks - The repairer wants £10 and has a pile of shoes waiting to be fixed - I think I'm in the wrong job

£8??? I'm almost embarrassed to admit that my 'back street' cobbler only charges around £3 for healing shoes and even less to repair stitching on leather handbags or back packs.:o

Are you giving your custom to a well known high street chain of shoe repairers? If yes, find a 'back street' cobbler and save yourself some money. Granted their (eg Timpsons) premises are tidy and clean and smart in comparison to the cobbler's shop..........but why pay for the surroundings when you're only interested in the end result?

As you will have seen from my 2nd post, £8 would have been cheap - he's now charging £10 !!!!. It's not a chain, but a one man shop on the high street - another example of rip-off Britain. what amazes me is that he's got a pile of work and wouldn't have mine done until the end of next week.

Unfortunately I don't know of any "back-street" guys, althouh the last one I used did such a great job re-soling a pair of leather shoes with leather, that they were totally waterproof and never wore out again. Unfortunately he was so good that he was headhunted by the great cobbler in the sky.

I really wish I was near your guy - I'd happily pay him double.
