Wood burner, open fireplace or gas fire?

1) youll need to have the fireplace & chimney checked before anything else is done
2) check with your council what you are allowed for a fire, some areas are smokeless, so that would mean getting smokeless coal etc
3) if you are allowed a coal fire or wood stove, where are you going to get the fuel from, & where are you going to store it.0 -
Some years ago we did what you are planning and went for an open fire because it's nice to have. We removed a gas fire and the liner in the flue. A wood burner would be more effective and efficient but doesn't create quite the same atmosphere. We love the open fire but then we do have an unlimited source of free wood.0

Thanks everyone for the advice/suggestions.
We have a few places where we can get free logs from and have storage so that part isn't a problem for us.
I think really I just need to check the liner - the house originally had open fires but that was some time ago and long before I moved in.
I'm hoping that I'll be able to go ahead but I'll check everything out properly first.
Many thanksI won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead
