Lost software for camera - new laptop

I have bought a new laptop and have lost the software for my camera. I have loaded some photos from my old laptop onto the new through a portable hard drive. However when I connect the camera to the new laptop it states that there is no software on the computer that is compatible with the camera. What is the best course of action?

Thanks for any help.

What make of camera is it? Google the manufacturer to find it's website and look for support pages and software downloads. a suitable driver may be on the site.

Try looking for the camera manufacturers website they usually let you download drivers and utilities from there, worth a look. Be aware if you have upgraded to Vista from xp the drivers may not be compatible.

You shouldn't need any software - you should just be able to plug it in and it will be recognised as an external drive.

Do you need to connect the camera? Can you just take the memory card out and put it in your laptop? Most laptops have an SD slot ( dont they?)

It is an Pentax Optio - bought about 3-4 years ago. I have had a look at the Pentax website (and e-mailed them but no response) but they seem to only have 'firmware' (?) offered as a download. No idea what this is. Unfortunately the new laptop does indeed have Vista as well. The computer definitely does not accept the camera as it states there is no software to run it. I can only think to try to memory card slot advice. Anyone know if Pentax has software I can access somewhere? Cheers
  • Buy a card reader (less than a tenner), download Picasa 3 to organise your photos, forget about using the original Pentax software

I never use software that comes with cameras. I just take the SD card out and plug it into my laptops card reader.

  • Vista will download the drivers automatically if required, if it's just the viewer software disc I would not bother about it. Have you tried plugging in the USB lead Vista should just load it for you.
