DLA Help

Hi Guys & Gal's

First post on here and i'm in need of some help please.

I was on income support and also getting DLA but i contacted my local benefit office to tell them i was now living with my partner and they then stopped my income support.I was told my DLA would remain which i am happy about but even tho our money was always as single people we have started to manage and tho being with my income support is hard i am happy to try.I asked the income support for more info on just what losing income support means but was really told to phone someone else as they did not want to know now !
My question is...
Can i still get my medication free with just being on DLA ? i can live without the free eye tests lol
My medication i need but i live on just DLA and my partner has her own debts so i am worried how i am going to afford the medication i need as it is a real worry and i know without it i will not last too long.
I take Lithuim and i know it is that pill that keeps me here and thats me being 100% honest.
Income support office and the very kind lady i spoke to ! told me to just find a job and my money worries would be over !!
Many thanks

    Hi

Just being on DLA you are not entitled to free prescriptions, however there is a scheme for people on low income or you can buy a pre-payment card which is what I have it works out about £10 a month and for that you can have unlimited prescriptions. As I am taking 5 different medications a day it saves me an awful lot of money.
Try the following link it has all the info you need.

Well she gets todays award for most insensitive person.
If you live in England you will have to pay for your prescriptions lm afraid. You can get a 4 or 12 month season ticket which saves money if you have several different tablets per month.unfortunatly this may be difficult for you to afford at the moment. Its £33 approx for the 4mths one.google prescription season ticket and you will find the info about it.
sorry cant give better news for you.
    take care x
:j this money saving is such fun:T
  • Hello and welcome!

We are a friendly bunch around here, and someone will always offer you their thoughts and advice.

DLA is a non means tested benefit, so you can be employed and still be entitled to it.
But due to that reason, you do not get the free prescriptions or eye care.

Have a look at the link below, and see if you may be entitled to free prescriptions on the basis of low income

    http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1125.aspx

Check this first, as if you go the next option, it's hard to claim you money pack.

If you have frequent prescriptions, you can purchase a prepayment certificate. You will usually benefit from buying a prepayment certificate if you have to pay for more than five prescription items in a four-month period, or more than 14 items in a twelve month period.

I hope this helps a little, and it will give you a starting point,

    Good luck

While I agree with mnc about checking out the low income cert first, I would say that whenever I've paid for things in the past (last time was a sight test), when the certificate has come through there's been an automatic refund of anything I'd paid in the previous 2 or 3 weeks within a couple of weeks. I'd been quite happy to pay for the sight test, so the cheque came as a pleasant surprise.

Last time I applied for the low income cert, it took them about 2 weeks to make a decision.

Anybody, whatever their income can buy a prescription "season ticket" for £93 (I think) a year. For a couple of pounds more you can buy this quarterly or pay monthly by direct debit.
  • The cost of the pre-payment certificate depends on where you live, and we don't know where the OP is from. So just in case - in Scotland it is £48 for a year, and will be reducing to zero in the future. Not sure how much it is in Wales.

Help with health costs can give you an HC2 certificate for full prescription costs if you fill in the HC1 form. You get an HC3 cert if you are only entitled to a % off as well so i guess it's tapered down. When I was on DLA and had a job 15 hours a week i got the full amount of help. The thing about HC1 is it takes into account your income and your essential expenditure so because i lived in a high cost area so that even my shared rent was astronomical I got help that someone with the same income but in a cheaper area would not have got. YOu can get the form from some GPs or from the jobcentre though i hear you can also find it online (give it a google if you want.)

    Hope that helps :)

If you're anywhere near Scotland you could hop over the border and get a free eye test.
